Cheese Hamper
A gift basket is a true classic among gifts – and for good reason: instead of a single product, various delicacies can be combined to create a very personal culinary experience.
A gift basket with cheese, in particular, offers a multitude of possibilities. From strong, well-aged cheese to chutneys and mustards, fine foods and exquisite wines, you can select the contents to suit the taste of your loved ones.
In this article, we explain what you should look for when selecting the individual products, which types of cheese are well-suited for a gift basket, and how to choose the right accompanying products. You will also find information on how to cool the gift basket and the best way to arrange shipping.
What belongs in a cheese gift basket?
The heart of a cheese gift basket is, of course, the cheese. Two to four different varieties ensure variety and allow the recipient to discover different flavors. The gift basket becomes particularly attractive when mild and strong varieties are combined.
Our tip from Backensholzer Hof: Less is sometimes more. Focus on a careful selection of cheeses and accompanying products that are harmoniously coordinated in taste. This way, you create a beautiful and high-quality gift basket. The recipient's taste is also an important selection criterion.
Which cheese is suitable for a gift basket?
For a gift basket, cheeses that are easy to portion and transport are particularly suitable. Hard cheese and aged semi-hard cheese are particularly practical for this. They have a firm texture and can also be excellently combined with other gourmet products.
A cheese gift basket becomes exciting with different flavors. For example, you can combine a mild, creamy semi-hard cheese with a strong, long-aged hard cheese. A blue cheese can also be a nice addition for cheese lovers.
If you don't know the recipient's taste precisely, a selection of mild, savory, and slightly strong varieties is a good choice. For true cheese fans, however, unusual and intensely aged specialties or even a goat or sheep cheese can certainly be included in the gift basket.
Does cheese in a gift basket need to be refrigerated?
Yes, cheese should always be stored cool. Even if long-aged hard and semi-hard cheeses are more robust than fresh or soft cheeses, a gift basket with cheese, especially during the warm summer months, should not remain unrefrigerated for an extended period.
Therefore, it is best to store the cheese in the refrigerator until delivery and assemble the gift basket as close to the gifting time as possible. Unless you have the option to store the entire gift basket chilled. If the basket is to be transported for a longer period or if outside temperatures are high, suitable cooling in a cooler box is also recommended.
An extra tip from Backensholzer Hof: Many cheeses develop their aroma better when not consumed directly from the refrigerator. We at Backensholzer Hof therefore recommend taking your cheese out of the refrigerator about an hour before consumption. This way, you can tease out every subtle flavor nuance and all the aromas from the cheese and enjoy it to the fullest.
Can a cheese gift basket be shipped?
A gift basket with cheese can also be shipped. Important factors are stable packaging, the shortest possible shipping time, and – depending on the season and the products included – suitable cooling.
The products should be arranged and cushioned in the package in such a way that they cannot shift or break during transport. Particularly fragile glasses or bottles require additional protection and padding. When shipping, you should also ensure that the package does not remain in a parcel center over the weekend if possible.
How we ship our gift baskets at Backensholzer Hof:
- Our cheese packages are generally shipped from Monday to Thursday to ensure timely delivery before the weekend.
- Every gift is packed by hand.
- The inside of the gift box is padded with wood wool.
- Ice packs for cooling are wrapped in paper and placed in the gift box, as otherwise the cooling performance through the box wall is not guaranteed. The lid is placed loosely on top. The entire packed gift is placed in a jute insulating bag.
- Upon receipt of the package, the recipient will find a card at the top of the box indicating the cooling packs, so they can remove them before gifting. The gift can then be decorated with a ribbon as desired.
- If no cooling and thus no insulating bag is required in winter, the gift box is stuffed all around with filler paper to prevent the shipping box from being damaged by the corners of the gift box.
- Additionally, the package receives the sticker "I am a gift" if a different delivery address has been specified. This ensures that the package is not refused at the front door or acceptance denied because the recipient was unaware of the surprise.
Making your own gift basket: Ideas for putting it together
Making your own gift basket has a big advantage: you can choose each product to suit the recipient. For this, you first need an empty gift basket, a wooden box, or a sturdy gift box. Then you select some main products and complement them with smaller delicacies.
A simple compilation could look like this, for example:
- a mild cheese
- a strong, longer-aged cheese
- a chutney or mustard
- a gourmet specialty such as salami or ham
- crackers or crispbread
- a bottle of wine
Other products that are also wonderfully suitable for a gift basket:
- nuts
- olives
- dried fruit
- honey
- jams and fruit spreads
- spices or herbal salts
- accessories like cheese knives, boards
- coffee or tea
- beer, schnapps, or non-alcoholic beverages
- pesto or savory spreads
- chocolate or pralines
- savory pastries like grissini, "Schüttelbrot" (crisp flatbread) etc.
- small decorative items
With a little wood wool or other filling material, the products can then be beautifully arranged and padded. Heavy products go at the bottom, more delicate items at the top. A personal card finally turns the gift basket into a very individual present!
Gift basket ideas for men
If you want to put together a gift basket for men, you don't necessarily have to stick to typical "men's gifts". It makes much more sense to orientate yourself to the personal taste of the recipient.
For lovers of strong flavors, a gift basket could consist of long-aged cheese, savory sausage, spicy mustard, and a suitable beer, for example. For a wine lover, on the other hand, various cheeses, chutney, crackers, and a bottle of high-quality wine would be suitable.
Gift basket ideas for women
Even with a gift basket for women, personal taste comes first. Those who enjoy cheese and gourmet foods, for example, will be delighted with a combination of various cheeses, fruity chutney, crackers, nuts, and a suitable wine or a bottle of sparkling wine.
Another nice idea is to turn it into a shared experience: instead of just filling the gift basket with food, you can include an invitation to a shared cheese evening or a tasting.
This turns the gift basket not only into a culinary present but also into shared time with friends.
Christmas Gift Basket
A Christmas gift basket is particularly suitable for people who seemingly have everything and for whom the question "What should I give?" arises anew every year. Food is consumed and does not remain unused in the cupboard gathering dust – and the compilation can still be very personal.
For a festive cheese gift basket, for example, strong aged cheeses, chutneys, mustard, nuts, sweet pastries, and other winter gourmet foods are suitable. Chocolate or pralines can also be a nice addition. Depending on taste, a nice bottle of red wine or even sparkling wine can be added.
A gift basket for Christmas is also a nice idea for couples or families, as the specialties included can be tasted and shared together.
